Visiting Artist & Critics Series
The UCCS Visiting Artists and Critics Series (VACS) fosters understanding and appreciation of contemporary art through dialogue and critical conversations. Artists and scholars of national significance are invited to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs campus to present public lectures and meet with UCCS undergraduate students in classes and workshop settings. The Visiting Artists & Critics Series is a collaborative program of the UCCS Galleries of Contemporary Art (GOCA), UCCS Visual Arts and Art History (VAPA).

ChitChat is a series of mash-up talks on contemporary culture and DIY topics. Each program features two speakers, hands-on and participatory learning, and a whole lot of lively conversation. This program sparks diverse discussions on contemporary life-specifically in the Pikes Peak Region-and features some of the most interesting minds in Colorado Springs. We are in our 5th season of this popular series; join us and reserve your seat today!

Celebrity Recital: Martina Filjak

One of the most exciting artists to emerge in recent years, Martina Filjak is garnering international praise for her poetic passion and technical mastery at the keyboard as well as for her charismatic personality and magnetic stage presence.

Martina Filjak came to international attention by winning the Gold Medal, the 1st prize and the Beethoven prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2009, which brought her numerous engagements in the United States and internationally. Prior to that, she won 1st prizes at the Maria Canals Piano Competition (Barcelona) and the Viotti Piano Competition (Vercelli), and was a laureate at the Busoni Piano Competition.

Colorado Springs Chorale presents: "Crossings"
Join Deborah Jenkins Teske and the Colorado Springs Chorale with special guest Ormao Dance Company to celebrate “crossings” of cultures, languages, oceans, and art forms. Hear the world premiere performance of a new work by renowned composer Shawn Kirchner, who will be in attendance. Hear settings of poetry by Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz, and a range of musical styles from Schumann to Whitacre, including music from the U.S., South Africa, Europe and the British Isles.

“Crossings” is presented with the generous support of Virginia Snow.

New work by Shawn Kirchner was commissioned for the Colorado Springs Chorale through the generous support of Richard and Sandra Hilt.

Transformations presented by The Chamber Orchestra of the Springs
The Chamber Orchestra’s season ends with the perfect blend of familiar repertoire and forgotten gems. The passionate Romantic language of Tchaikovsky speaks through Arensky’s Variations, while the overlooked voice of pioneering African-American composer Florence Price comes to life in an astonishing performance of her Piano Concerto in One Movement by special guest Karen Walwyn, piano. A rare performance of Brahms’ Tragic Overture is a “must hear,” along with Mendelssohn’s “Reformation” Symphony in a performance with so much energy and drive that you might just entirely rethink the piece!

Barry Douglas has established a major international career since winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, Moscow. As Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland and the Clandeboye Festival, he continues to celebrate his Irish heritage whilst also maintaining a busy international touring schedule.

Recent highlights include performances at BBC Proms in the Park with the Ulster Orchestra, a UK tour with the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, and appearances with Orchestre de Auvergne, Barcelona Symphony, Bogota Philharmonic and Vancouver Symphony orchestras. He also recently gave the premiere of Kevin Volans’ fourth piano concerto with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, and performed in recital at the Verbier Festival.

In 1999 Barry Douglas founded the chamber orchestra Camerata Ireland to celebrate and nurture the very best of young musicians from both Northern and the Republic of Ireland. In addition to striving for musical excellence, one of the orchestra’s aims is to further the peace process in Ireland by promoting dialogue and collaboration through its musical education programmes. He received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2002 New Year’s Honours List for services to music.

Ballet West II has established a reputation as an elite touring ensemble, performing a broad spectrum of dance to sold-out audiences across the United States. The group captivates audiences with its “stunning physicality and partner work” (Pueblo Chieftain), inspiring a new generation of both classical and contemporary ballet enthusiasts. This mixed-repertoire performance will include all-new work.

Vijay Iyer Sextet
Grammy-nominated composer-pianist Vijay Iyer was described by Pitchfork as “one of the most interesting & vital young pianists in jazz today.” The Vijay Iyer Sextet, a group of virtuoso improvisers lauded as one of the pivotal jazz bands of the twenty-first century, will perform material from their critically acclaimed album Far From Over.
